So, What Exactly Is the MEXT Scholarship?

The MEXT Scholarship short for Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology scholarship is one of the most respected government scholarships in the world.

Every year, Japan sponsors international students from selected countries to study in Japanese universities completely free of charge.

Who Can Apply?

1. Undergraduate Students

This category is for students who have completed secondary school (S6) and want to pursue a full Bachelor’s degree in Japan.

2. College of Technology Students

Ideal for students interested in engineering, applied sciences, and technical education.

3. Research Students (Master’s & PhD)

This category is for university graduates who want to continue with postgraduate studies, research, a Master’s degree, or a PhD.

At the moment, the Research Student category is the main confirmed application currently open through the Embassy of Japan in Rwanda.

Eligibility Requirements

Before you get excited and start preparing documents, make sure you qualify.

You Must Have Strong Academic Results

Applicants are required to have at least a 70% average across their entire university program.

Not your final year only.
Your full academic average.

This requirement is taken very seriously.

You Must Be Rwandan

Only Rwandan citizens are eligible through this application route.

Age Limit

Most applicants should generally be under 35 years old at the time of enrollment.

Good Health Is Required

You will need a medical certificate signed by a licensed doctor confirming that you are fit to study abroad.

Other Important Conditions

Applicants must:

  • Be ready to study in Japan full-time
  • Not hold Japanese citizenship
  • Follow all scholarship rules and procedures

What Does the Scholarship Cover?

Monthly Allowance

Research students receive approximately ¥143,000 per month (around $950 USD), depending on the field and year.

One important thing to remember: the written examination must be done physically in Kigali. Online exams are not allowed.

What Happens After You Apply?

The process happens in several stages.

Step 1: Document Screening

The Embassy reviews all submitted applications and shortlists candidates.

Step 2: Written Examination

Shortlisted students sit for English and/or Japanese language tests in Kigali.

Step 3: Interview

Successful candidates are invited for interviews at the Embassy.

Step 4: Final Review in Japan

Japan’s Ministry of Education conducts the final screening.

Step 5: Results Announcement

Selected students are informed between January and February 2027.
